The Dual Renewal Trap

Florida patients must track two separate renewal deadlines that don't align. Missing either one locks you out of purchasing medicine.

This Is the #1 Reason Patients Lose Access

The dual renewal system is the most common reason Florida medical marijuana patients are unexpectedly locked out of purchasing. Set calendar reminders for both deadlines.

Two Independent Renewal Cycles

Florida medical marijuana patients must maintain two completely separate registrations that expire on different schedules:

1. MMUR ID Card (Annual)

  • Expires one year from the date of issuance
  • Renewal applications open 45 days before expiration
  • Costs $75 per renewal
  • Renewed online through the MMUR portal at mmuregistry.flhealth.gov

2. Physician Certification (Every 210 Days)

  • Expires 210 days (approximately 7 months) from the physician's certification date
  • Requires a follow-up evaluation with your certifying physician
  • Costs $99–$200 per visit (varies by provider)
  • Subsequent recertifications may be conducted via telehealth (per HB 387, 2023)

Why the Deadlines Don't Align

The 210-day physician certification cycle and the 365-day card renewal cycle are completely independent of each other. A patient who gets their card in January and their physician certification in January will need to recertify with their physician in August, then renew their card the following January, then recertify with their physician again in March — the cycles drift apart over time.

This means a patient typically needs approximately two physician recertification visits per year at $99–$200 each, plus the annual $75 card renewal — creating an ongoing cost of $275–$475 per year just to maintain access.

What Happens If Either Lapses

If either the ID card or the physician certification expires:

  • The MMUR system will block all purchases at dispensaries
  • You may still legally possess previously purchased medicine
  • You cannot buy new products until both registrations are current
  • There is no grace period — the lockout is immediate upon expiration

How to Avoid Getting Locked Out

Action When to Do It
Set calendar reminders for both expiration dates Immediately after getting your card
Schedule physician recertification At least 2–3 weeks before the 210-day deadline
Renew your MMUR ID card As soon as the 45-day renewal window opens
Check both dates on the MMUR portal Monthly
